Canada’s Trade with the EU Reaches 48.8 Billion Euros in 2025

BRUSSELS, Belgium / RankWire.AI / – The bilateral trade of goods between Europe and North America hit a record total of 81.8 billion euros last year, highlighting the strength of integrated trade partnerships. As reported by Eurostat, the EU exported goods worth 48.8 billion to Canada in 2025, reflecting a 1.2 percent increase compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Canadian imports into Europe saw a significant rise of 18.0 percent, reaching 33.0 billion euros. Industry analysts attribute this high-volume, sustained exchange to tariff reductions and aligned customs procedures established through the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which continues to shield cross-border trade from broader geopolitical market fluctuations.

Eurostat’s latest data shows Canadian import figures grew at a faster pace than European exports. European shipments to Canada increased modestly by 1.2 percent from 48.2 billion euros in 2024, whereas Canadian imports into Europe surged by 18.0 percent from 28.0 billion euros during the same period. As a result, the total value of goods exchanged between the two economies reached 81.8 billion euros for the year. Experts believe that this rapid growth in imports is driven by heightened European demand for key Canadian natural resources, advanced aerospace components, and specialized industrial materials necessary for sustaining continental manufacturing and achieving ambitious industrial output goals.

Sector-specific analysis indicates heavy machinery and mechanical appliances topped the list of European exports, totaling 9.4 billion euros or nearly twenty percent of the total export volume. Pharmaceutical products followed as the second-largest category at 5.5 billion euros, with automotive vehicles and motorcycles close behind at 5.4 billion euros. Additionally, in 2025, the EU exported 48.8 billion in goods to Canada, including 3.3 billion euros in electrical equipment and 2.0 billion euros in precision optical and medical instruments. These categories underscore Europe’s competitive edge in producing high-value, technologically advanced industrial and healthcare products tailored for North American markets with strict regulations.

Canadian Imports Grow at a Faster Pace Than European Exports

In contrast, Canadian imports into Europe reveal Europe’s strategic dependency on external raw materials and specialized manufactured parts. The largest category was ores, slag, and industrial ash, accounting for 4.0 billion euros and over twelve percent of total inbound trade. Machinery and mechanical appliances followed with 3.8 billion euros, illustrating the strong two-way trade in industrial equipment. European supply chains also imported 3.1 billion euros worth of Canadian mineral fuels and distillation products. The aerospace sector remained robust, with aircraft and spacecraft components totaling 2.9 billion euros, alongside a consistent 1.9 billion euros in Canadian pharmaceutical supplies supporting European healthcare systems.

This trade volume marks a significant shift from the relationship prior to the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Between 2015 and 2017, bilateral merchandise trade grew at an average annual rate of 4.7 percent. After the treaty’s provisional enforcement in September 2017, trade accelerated sharply, climbing from 54.2 billion euros in 2018 to the current 81.8 billion euros. Over the past eight years, the growth rate averaged 6.1 percent annually, underscoring the benefits of tariff reductions and simplified customs protocols introduced through this transatlantic partnership.

Tariff Eliminations Support Small and Medium Enterprises

This ongoing trade expansion occurred despite various logistical hurdles and geopolitical shifts affecting global shipping routes. By removing customs duties on ninety eight percent of all traded goods, the transatlantic trade agreement laid a stable foundation that shielded European and Canadian businesses from wider international market uncertainties. Supply chain managers on both sides utilized this predictable regulatory environment to establish long-term procurement agreements and develop production facilities across the Atlantic. Consequently, small and medium-sized enterprises gained unprecedented access to global markets, which had previously been limited by complex bureaucratic procedures and high compliance costs associated with non-preferential trade frameworks.

Officials and diplomatic representatives emphasize that the 2025 data reinforce the importance of maintaining open international markets and resisting protectionist policies. The 15.8 billion euro surplus highlights Europe’s strong manufacturing competitiveness, while the 18.0 percent surge in Canadian imports illustrates Europe’s ability to efficiently incorporate foreign commodities. As global supply chains evolve around reliable allies, the economic relationship between Brussels and Ottawa exemplifies deep economic integration. Both regions anticipate continued growth in trade throughout 2026, focusing on critical minerals, sustainable energy technologies, and further harmonization of digital commerce rules.
