Ontario Lifts Restricted Fire Zone and Travel Ban After Heavy Rainfall Relief

THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — Following significant rainfall that eased wildfire concerns, emergency forestry restrictions across Northwestern Ontario were terminated early Thursday. The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the regional restricted fire zone and the backcountry travel ban officially ended at 12:01 a.m. This move concludes weeks of strict outdoor burning bans imposed throughout the Northwest Region to mitigate the risk of wildfires.

Ontario confirms restricted fire zone and travel ban to be lifted
Highway maintenance crews clear public roadways to restore regional transit and emergency access.

Officials overseeing provincial fire management confirmed that valid burning permits are now reinstated, allowing outdoor fires, recreational burns, and fireworks displays in accordance with standard safety protocols. In Thunder Bay, municipal authorities declared that their local fire bans would also conclude at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, reminding residents that municipal permits are still required for open-air fires. The decision to lift restrictions was driven by cooler weather and widespread rain, which significantly decreased active fuel loads and wildfire risk.

Northwestern Ontario’s Restricted Fire Zone and Travel Ban Removed

Along with the end of burning restrictions, emergency management officials lifted localized access limitations in the Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation regions. Regional transportation agencies confirmed that major highways, including Highway 527 and Highway 811, have been fully reopened to civilian traffic. This reopening enables residents displaced by earlier restrictions to return home and restores regular commercial and recreational traffic along key routes.

Ontario Forest Fires’ tracking systems verified that orders related to major fire complexes, such as Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34, were revoked at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Additionally, evacuation alerts previously issued for the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border have been rescinded after safety evaluations confirmed that active suppression efforts had successfully contained perimeter threats.

Restrictions in the Regional Fire Zone Lifted This Morning

While the regional bans are no longer in effect, provincial fire officials highlighted that wildfire suppression teams remain engaged on remaining remote fires. Emergency crews warn that, although immediate safety risks have eased, individuals should still exercise caution when igniting fires on dry ground. Environmental agencies will continue monitoring humidity and lightning activity to adjust fire hazard levels across the remainder of the summer fire season.

Local leaders in northern communities expressed appreciation for the lifting of emergency directives, emphasizing that reestablished access is vital for supporting local outdoor operators and tourism. The provincial government thanked residents and visitors for their cooperation during the peak danger period. As the measures take full effect, authorities urge everyone participating in outdoor activities to adhere strictly to provincial fire safety regulations.
